Question: Do Smoke Alarms Need Servicing?
Answer: You should replace the batteries in your smoke detectors at least every six months. The batteries should be replaced in battery powered smoke detectors as well as smoke detectors that are AC powered and have a battery back-up.
At the same time as replacing the battery you should dust the smoke detector using a soft paint brush, ensuring that there are no cob webs forming around the unit or small bugs plugging the air intake areas of the smoke detector. This is especially true in smoke detectors mounted in basement locations. A vacuum cleaner can also be used.
I would also suggest that you purchase quality batteries, your life and that of your families may depend on the smoke detector working. Saving a few cents on batteries really makes little sense!
