Question: I have been told by my neighbor that I should not to use plumber’s putty to seal the drain on my new cultured marble sink. This doesn’t make sense to me. Is he correct?
Answer: Your neighbor is giving you sound advice. Plumber’s putty can and will cause staining on any of the cultured products such as cultured marble, granite and onyx.
If you check the label on your plumber’s putty you should see a note that says something to the effect; "Do not use on cultured marble".
However, you do need to provide a sealant between the drain and your new cultured marble sink. I recommend that you use silicone.
