Question: I am installing a relatively large walk-in shower. The floor and walls will be porcelain tile. Can electric radiant heat be installed under a shower floor?
Answer: The answer is yes. There is specifically designed, low voltage electric radiant heat systems that are made to go under ceramic and porcelain shower floor tile, as shown in Figure 1. No longer do you have to step onto a cold shower floor!
These low voltage electric radiant heat systems will also work under natural stone and such as marbles and granites.
The systems operate from 24 volts rather than the standard electric radiant heat systems that operate at 120 volts.
They also work well to warm other areas in the bathroom such as tub surrounds, steam showers and saunas.
It should be noted that due to the requirement for electrical connections and the fact that it goes beneath the flooring, retrofitting these electric radiant heat systems is not an easy project. They really should only be considered for new construction and complete bathroom remodeling projects.
