Noise Control

Walls, Floors and Ceilings

Problem: Sound or noise leaking close to the floor wall junction.

Cause: No sealant under the sole plate

Solutions: Be sure to seal the sole plate in one of the ways shown in Figure 4a, 4b and 4c.

The method depicted in Figure 4a makes it easy to verify that sealant has been applied, but it can make the installation of carpet messy. The method shown in Figure 4b avoids the mess but is difficult to inspect.

Figure 4c - Sealing At Sole Plate - Option 3

The trim can be glued on a wall that has resilient metal furring it it, or a strip of fiberboard or wood can be placed at the foot of the wall as shown in Figure 4c. This provides a nailing surface for installing baseboards and reduces the risk of impacts damaging the drywall.
