Problem: Cracking of brick veneer.
Cause: Masonry veneer can bend and crack under wind pressures where adequate lateral support is not provided.
Solutions:
- Corrosion-resistant masonry veneer ties are required for brick veneer that is thicker than 2 15/16 inches (75 mm). Ties must be at least 1/32 inch (1 mm) thick, 7/8 inch (22 mm) wide, and shaped to provide a key with the mortar. Fasteners for ties should penetrate no less than 1 1/4 inches (30 mm) as shown in Figure 48.
Table 1 provides the minimum spacing for vertical and horizontal brick veneer ties.
Maximum Vertical |
Maximum Horizontal |
16 (400) 20 (500) 24 (600) |
32 (800) 24 (600) 16 (400) |
