Problem: Deterioration of asphalt shingle surface.
Cause: Sunlight and high roof temperatures can cause differential hardening of the asphalt material through the shingle.
The exterior surface hardens faster than the interior This can lead to the eventual break-up of the roofing material (Figure 2) and the penetration water.

Solutions: Keep roof temperatures down.
- Ventilate the roof space in accordance with local building codes to reduce high temperatures in attic areas as shown in Figure 3.

Ease the effects of solar radiation by selecting lighter aggregate colors to reflect some of the radiation.
