The Cost Of Home Improvements - Part 2

Part 1

Decks:

Includes foundation, above grade construction, one set of straight steps, railing and finishing (building permit and plans, if required, are not included)

Deck material is the biggest factor to different prices. There is a substantial difference between pressure treated lumber, cedar, redwood and composite materials.

Budget: $45 to $100 per square foot.

Exterior Doors:

Includes removal of old door and door frame, replacement of exterior and interior door trims, new thresholds and caulking. These prices assume that the door and door frame being installed are the same physical size as the door and door frame being removed and no structural construction work is required.

Entry Doors: $1,000 to $5,000 (the primary consideration in the cost is the price of the door - based on the material and if it is has a decorative glass panes and or sidelights).

Patio Doors: $1,500 to $4,000

Garages:

Includes architects plans, building permits and inspections, foundation, concrete slab floor, walls, roof, garage and entry doors, exterior siding, shingled roof, no interior finish, electrical and lighting. Does not include running electrical service to garage or any driveway work.

Budget: $40 to $80 per square foot.

Kitchens:

It is impossible to provide a basic budget for a kitchen renovation. Besides the fact that kitchens vary so dramatically in size and shape, the prices of appliances, kitchen cabinets and countertops, from low end to high end have no commonality.

As an example, just one appliance - a cooktop can vary in price from $400 to $8,000.

To obtain a budget number, visit a local kitchen renovation store and discuss your specific needs and requirements.
