Problem: Poor noise reduction from a lightweight floor system
Cause: Ceiling directly attached to the floor joists.
Solutions: Use resilient metal furring to support the ceiling as described in the section on Noise Control For Walls, Floors & Ceilings.
- Do not use nailed wood furring, since the rigid coupling they provide between the floor and the ceiling transmits sound vibrations through them.
- Double the mass of a drywall ceiling installed on resilient furring to reduce noise transmission. Do not do the same on nailed wood furring - it doses not improve noise control.
Cause: Poor sealing at edges of ceiling
Solutions: Seal the wall-ceiling junction with regular tape and joint compound.
